Those of you who know me well, will also know that I am and always have been into my AJS/Matchless machines. Therefore I was delighted to see this particular example in the showroom and lost no time in persuading Donna to accompany me on two or three ride out into the Derbyshire Peak District on it after we had completely serviced the bike.
The 1954 model that this is, was a vastly different machine to earlier examples. The flywheel was lighter and the compression plate removed. The carburettor was a slightly bigger bore and the cam profiles were different to0. All this made for a slightly more sprightly engine that like to rev a little more than say my Dad’s 1951 example that’s in our showroom now. (but not for sale of course!)
The 1954 model was the first year of the full width front brake and again this was a very unusual flat profile version that was later superseded of course by the more barrel shaped affair.
I can safely say that this machine with the auto advance starts easily and runs very well even two-up and the panniers fitted that are easily removable by the way, make the bike a practical classic touring machine.
